Wussification: No Balls Middle School (Podcast)
A Long Island, New York, middle school has banned games with "hard" balls, like football, soccer, baseball and lacrosse, "hard" forms of tag and other tackling games, and even cartwheels over fears that kids might get hurt. Weber Middle School does allow soft footballs. Dr. Kathleen Mooney, superintendent of the Port Washington School District, told a local CBS-TV affiliate, "Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious, so we want to make sure our children have fun, but are also protected." The CBS station suggested that parents believe the school may have decided to take this action now because they're concerned about getting sued if students are hurt during recess.
